Inductively Coupled Plasma is a popular technique to analyze both new and in-service lubricants for elemental content. Many laboratories choose to deviate from standard method requirements when it comes to sample preparation by dilution. This decision is typically governed by time demands and the sheer number of samples that the laboratory must analyze on a daily basis. Both analytical instrument companies and the laboratory errantly justify this decision by compensating with a normative factor or a physical internal standard during sample preparation and analysis, respectively. This workshop will provide a summary of new automation technology that allows laboratories to fully conform with gravimetric sample preparation and detail examples of why this sample preparation method is preferred when it comes to lubricant analysis.
